Start with how you pay the bill
If you carry a balance most months, the interest rate is the only number that matters. No rewards program outruns a 20-something percent APR.
Use last year's spending
Pull your statements, total the spending by category, and run it through each card's earning rules and caps. Subtract the annual fee. Ignore credits for things you don't buy anyway.
Be honest about redemption
Cash back is simple to use. Travel points can be worth more, but only if you travel enough, find award availability, and book the way the program wants. Confirm the current terms on the issuer's site before you apply.
Now put it to use
